Yes, they are different. If you look on the dipstick itself, it will have "8RT", "8BA", or "8CM" (Merc) stamped on it.
8RT dipstick: 12-5/8" from cap to Full mark 8BA dipstick: 13-3/8" " " " 8CM dipstick: 14-1/4" " " "

Re: Ford flathead 49 to 53 oil pan difference
The tubes are different lengths too.
Best method to check is to put 5 quarts of oil in an empty pan and remark the stick if it is wrong. Or measure the length of tube while it is still screwed into the casting and add 4 7/8", That is the FULL mark. I have done this with 3 pans that I have, they all measured 2" from the bottom of the pan flange to the top rivet. Put a smaller mark 5/8" below that and that means "1 quart low". Makes it easy to estimate how much to add when topping up, |

Re: Ford flathead 49 to 53 oil pan difference
All the different oil pans in the 8BA era have different dip sticks and oil pickup tubes. The Chassis parts catalogs have part numbers and lengths in most cases but it helps to have both car, truck, and Mercury specific parts catalogs to find them all.

The '49-'51 Mercury pans have rear sumps, while '52-'53 Fords and Mercurys shared the same ribbed center sump pans.
