Default '59 Fuel Pump Issue

The fuel pump on my '59 Galaxie 292 cu in will no longer pump fuel. This is the double one that also operates the wipers. After searching the archives here it's apparent there are no rebuild kits available and the made in China ones are junk. Some have used an electric pump to push fuel to the engine. I ordered a Carter P4070 low pressure pump which was suggested. My question is can I leave the old pump in place to run the wipers and push fuel through the pump or bypass the old pump and go straight to the carb?

I'd run fuel straight to the carb and let the old pump do vacuum duty. I'd also send that old pump to Charlie Schwendler in NY and let him fix it. He does fine work. 716-662-9159

A source for a rebuild of yours is AG Rebuilders in Massachusetts. I have had a few done by them with no problems.

I believe there is actually a kit available.
I bought on of the summit pump and it was only good for idle and very slow driving. It would surge funny under load. Check the yblocksforever forum.

If you are just running the pump there for vacuum. Might as well check the vacuum pressure on the two lines with and would fuel see if it's the same plugged or not.im sure an expert will chime in.

You can, but if the fuel section diaphragm is damaged, gasoline may be pumped into the crankcase. And you would possibly need a fuel pressure regulator also.

I would rebuild the pump - https://www.then-now-auto.com/fuel-p...fp-kits-single

If you experience VAPOR LOCK at any point, then maybe consider an ELECTRIC PUMP as a PRIMER.

Whatever you decide to do, if the pump is original and can be rebuilt, DO NOT use it as a CORE RETURN. Good cores are hard to find.

It appears to be original. It has the glass bowl with the brass screen on the bottom. I don't see a name or number on it anywhere. I see the kits are for certain manufactures.

You need to call the above vendor and speak with them for the proper kit.

My understanding is that Then & Now is out of business

I have called Then And Now Automotive and their parent company Antique Parts Cellar several times and I get the same message that the mail box is full. Never get an answer. I'll have to assume they are gone.

I find it hard to believe that something as simple as a rebuild kit is so hard to find ...

Have used this outfit for three pumps. No problems and good turnaround time

Thumbs up Re: '59 Fuel Pump Issue

Yeah, I just gave him the source. As long as you say they are good is all that matters ...
