Default 40 Sedan Engine Compression

Hello , name is Dave from S/E Indiana. I acquired a 40 2door sedan that a fella had owned since 1965 a couple weeks ago. Hasn’t been run in years, not sure how many to be exact. Engine turns over but has no spark. I ran a compression test this afternoon and numbers range from 110 to 60. I’m hoping the low compression cylinders are the ones that the valves was open during it’s slumber.. what’s everyone’s opinions and thoughts on my thinking. Below are my readings.

1. 75. 5. 70
2. 85. 6. 60
3. 85. 7. 100
4. 110. 8. 95

Since its running, it may un-stick itself with some running.

MMO at idle down the carb will help all the above. Pour it down till it smokes out then run the piss out of it. It might take a couple runs. Rings will loosen up too. ....Pulled a few hit/miss engine pistons and it took just a couple light hits with a block of wood to free them.

If after a month the compression doesn't change. do a dry compression check and a wet (little oil in the cylinders) If the compression increases, it's probably rings/cylinders clearance.

Rule of thumb is 10/15 lbs between cylinders. 6 looks suspect. But if this is a driver I'd say have fun driving!

it could be a bad head gasket too. Do the easy stuff first, with the MMO as it burns up and oils. Then open it up if you think it needs it.

Was this test done dry? If so, did you another test - wet?

The test was performed dry, car hasn’t ran in probably 20 years. Still doesn’t run no spark. It put some Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders and plan to run another test in a few days.

My bad, I thought you had it running... Get it running for a bit then look at compression again later. Heat of running and oiling will help things loosen up, imo. Maybe start a thread asking about no spark.

Low compression (60lbs) on a flathead won't make it not fire. Best of luck!

Ive been in touch with Bubba for the distributor, Charlie For carbureter and fuel pump and plan to send the coil to Skip Haney. We’ll see what happens after it’s running and go from there.

It's a great set of people there. You can expand on. Get it running. Figure out your spark issue. Get a few ducks in order and a few more might follow.

best of luck!

Mr.Tinker is Correct. Your numbers are not bad. Not great but not bad.I have run a 40
For years with 60 lbs of compression. Check with Bubba(Jim Linder) for your ignition needs. Get it running and then go from there.
