Champion 3X plugs
I really like the looks of the old Champion 3X plugs, but I have read horror stories about the newer reproductions now being made, sold on ebay, etc. I have a couple of questions. How can one tell the bad from the good? Do they appear exactly like the originals or what are the differences? Also, my car fairly good right now with Champion W 16 Y plugs... am I just asking for trouble or can I expect a change in performance? Comments please.

Re: Champion 3X plugs
the replacement plugs look pretty darn good
there are some differences though the nut at the top is incorrectly made, but works fine the "3" on the original plug has a rounded top, while the new plug has a flat top the knurling is dimpled in ,rather than sticking out and the original knurling goes all the way down the base, while the new plug stops about 1/16 from the bottom of the base the original is on the right tom |

Re: Champion 3X plugs
Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I saw a nice collection of 'older' repro 3X's the other day. Flat 3's and short knurling, but definitely old(relatively). Any difference in new vs old reproduction plugs?

Re: Champion 3X plugs
I used the Champion 3X plugs on my trip to Alaska, 11,609 miles, and they worked fine. I have not heard any bad reports on these plugs. I must be out of the loop. My avg. mileage was 20.6 mpg and the only problem we had was in extreem heat (over 100 deg.) trying to vapor lock when we stopped to fill up, i think fuel related (ethenol).

Re: Champion 3X plugs
I think the "bad" things said about the modern production 3 X have to do with the already-stated cosmetic differences and not about function.
They will cost you points in fine-point judging (MARC or MAFCA), but AACA might not even notice the difference between original and repro ? Supposedly, they are "the best" plug to run in a Model A. I have a set of modern 3 X , but somehow just can't bring myself to install $100 /worth of plugs into a my oil-burning daily-driver jalopy... |

Re: Champion 3X plugs
I use the original 3x style in my cars, & see no difference in performance back when I used the reproduction style..
