Default What is the difference between these 2 alternators?

I've never purchased a Model A alternator before, and I'm not sure what would be appropriate for my car, which is 6 volt positive ground. What is the difference between these 2 alternators?

Both of them appear to be 6 volt positive ground. Why would I want one over the other?

One puts out 35 amps and the other puts out 65 amps. I see no need for the 65 amp alternator unless you have quartz headlights and I see no need for them.

One is a 30 amp and the other a 60 amp. I you are going to run a lot of accessories you may need the the higher amp alternator. Call Snyders and discuss your needs with them and they will make a recommendation. Good luck

One is capable of 60 amp charging and the other is 35 amp. Unless you are running both Halogen headlights and a bunch of other things, you would never really need 60 amps. Most people run a 30 amp fuse in their systems and that never blows unless you have a short. What's wrong with your current alternator?

Nothing is wrong with the current alternator. I’m looking to buy a spare.

60 amps at 7 volts charging is 420 watts or 0.56 horsepower. There is some inefficiency so maybe bump that up to 3/4 horsepower. Of course after the battery is charged and there is no longer 60 amps being supplied the drag on the engine goes way down. For a 60 amp alternator the belt has to be kept tight which adds additional strain on the water pump.

A 60-amp alternator will charge the battery quicker than a 30-amp alternator. In a Model "A," the only time an alternator will normally go to maximum output is to charge the battery immediately after starting the engine. I recommend a 60-amp alternator even though a 30-amp alternator will work because it is nice to have extra power in the event you need to jump start another car, or the car develops a poor grounds, or when the battery is on its last legs.

On most model A alternator installations output amperage is limited by belt slippage, if you can push on the fan with a finger and slip the pulley on the belt the output will be far below the alternators rated output.
In most cases and from my experience the rated output is the maximum cold output, it drops a lot when hot.
If you expect to use 60 amps the wiring has to be of a size for that output

Some folks want all the bells and whistles including A/C. Higher amp will pull that stuff better. Personally, I am fine with a generator but then I don't care for the bells and whistles. I like simple. I probably do more maintenance than some folks but it really doesn't take much time to keep old model A & T cars up.

What makes you think that you need a spare alternator?
Do you have a spare alternator for your modern car?

I think I know what he wants, parts are harder to get now than five years ago .I see a lot of sold out at the vendors sites and parts have gone up over a year ago.Have you priced a motometer lately? They have doubled in price and were not available to get for a while.

In the past, when my modern car alternator failed on a trip, I just visited Advance Auto, and they had one on the shelf that I bought. I had tools in the car, and I replaced the part without any trouble. I was several hundred miles away from home when that happened.

My wife and I drive our Model A a lot. Knowing my luck, it is highly unlikely that my Model A 6 volt positive ground alternator will fail anywhere near a place that will sell a suitable replacement.

I’d rather be prepared than stranded. Some of the roads we take don’t have cell service.

Maybe you don’t need a spare, but I’d like to have one for peace of mind.

Agreed.

2 blade aluminum fans just became available again. Who would ever have thought that there would be a shortage of them?

Two years ago, I had trouble finding new tires and new tubes.

Last year, I couldn’t find a replacement water pump for weeks on end.

This year, it was a royal pain to find a new or used replacement universal joint when I needed to replace mine.

Folks tell me, “That’s a lot of stuff to carry.” Yes, it is, but I may not have easy access to what I need when something fails.

We recently drove 500 miles to Hamilton, OH, and my starter switch started acting up, and I didn’t have a spare. I have a spare now.

My car has the NuRex high output 6V alternator. It had halogen headlights. I have converted it to LED headlights so there is no need for the high output alternator.

Paul Shinn did a video on building your own alternator. New GM one wire alternators are about $60 on ebay and the other parts are about 80. You'll still need to get a pulley and get/make a mount.
