hello do you think a vega steering box is better than ford box in a 46 coupe

It will steer incredibly easy but wear out fast. They are marginal in a 32. A 525 box would be better.

What's wrong with the 46 Ford box? When rebuilt and adjusted correctly, they work well. If it's for the car in your avatar, maybe go to a narrower front tire.

Use a Saginaw 525 with an adapter. or a 605 PS box fits in the sane place,

Well, Andy ain't a newcomer to this stuff, AND........... "marginal in a '32" might have been a LITTLE bit over-stated, but a Vega in a heavy ol' '46 is damned sure more "marginal" than I'd ever feel safe with. A 525 is about as good as it gets, kind'a almost like what Andy said. DD

I ain't no newcomer either. I think after all the A thru 34 chassis built with Vega box's by now there would have been news about catastrophic failures. Not to say there may not have been one but in my shop after a few issues with box FR, I've used the North American built OEM box's with no problems, and we're talking a lot of chassis with a lot of miles. 35-48 I agree the only way to go is a 525.

He installed electric steering and at the Moonshine fest he could flat palm his car in & out of any parking spot he wanted to. " VERY " impressive indeed !

By marginal I meant they are AT their limit, not over. Anything with more heft needs a stronger box. I have worn out a few with the 150 thousand miles I have on my roadster. A box designed for a aluminum 4 is doing well to steer an iron V8. Gm never designed much with any over kill strength.

Looks like I need to get some info on this electric steering. my 48 steers like a tank. Yes I know I should loose the radial tires. Lets hear about the electric steering.

Steering by Armstrong in my 36 is getting OLD. Installation pix and pitfalls. Sources for equipment ,cost, gennie parts needed to complete the process. This would be HUGE!!! Thanks ahead of time. JM |

I have a Unisteer EPS system in a 33 Chrysler imperial street rod. After driving the Imperial (3,300# car) for a year without the power steering assist I can attest to the fact the addition made a big difference in driving comfort especially at slow speeds in tight quarters. In addition to ease of vehicle operation the other advantage with EPS is that there is no pump to rob engine HP along with all the plumbing to deal with in the engine compartment. The Imperial steering is rack and pinion which made for a relatively easy install. I think its more involved with a conventional steering box, but still doable. The EPS systems have been around since the 90's. Suzuki and Honda both pioneered the use of them so the technology is proven. To get up on the learning curve I would recommend starting with a search on the HAMB there are a couple of threads that have discussed EPS pro and con.
