Replaceing a Fan Belt on '35
Had to replace the fan belt on the '35. Ordered and received a 40-8620 belt. Having a bear of a time getting the belt on. It seems a bit tight--any ideas or similiar problems with this belt and its installation?

Do you have the correct intake on that engine? In 37 the intake gen mount is a bit higher.

Re: Replaceing a Fan Belt on '35
I ran into the same problem (on a 36 engine). I couldn't make the belt sold by one of the vendors fit. I very well might have a later intake, as DL suggests. In any event, I ordered another belt at my local parts store, based on the length needed. In my case, a Dayco 5L570 works well. (I think this is 57.0-in, and the previous belt that I couldn't install, is 55.5-in.)
Also note... I've never been able to install the belt, simply slipping it on. I've always had to remove the fan, un-do the gen from the intake, and tip the gen forward, to get the belt on. |

Here is a pic that I posted on an intake question. This shows the difference between the two intakes. Ed

Of course your vendor will tell you that you are the first one to complain about the fit...!
If you measure that "1935/1936 Ford Belt" that the vendors sell you will find it's too short. Get a Gates B-54 and you will be a happy camper. |

Re: Replaceing a Fan Belt on '35
I have a stock '49 F1. The 53" water pump/generator belt I tried to use from Macs, is labelled 53", but is shorter and won't fit. Macs 55" belt, part# 40-8620-S, is actually 53" and fits perfectly - a friend bought it for his 36 and it is too small. My fan belt needs to be 34" and, again Macs belt, part# 21A-8577-S labelled as 36", is two inches shorter and does the job. Packaging on both belts says 'Made in USA'. ???

I also have had the same problem using a USA made belt. Turns out that Bobh has it right, wether you have an early 35 or late 35 manifold - yes they are different, you have to tilt the gen/fan assembly to get it on.
I have tried both manifolds with same belt and similar result. Daveh |

2x the NAPA B54 belt.
Don't try to shoehorn the one you got with he Ford part number onto the car it will be way too tight. |
