Default phone use OF topic

Any one have an idea how we can buy a mobile phone to use on our trip to bonneville this year.
If we use our Australian mobile the bill is huge.
Can we buy a cheap mobile and get a prepaid card.
Thanks Lawrie

Buy a prepaid phone at Walmart. It is $30 for 1,500 minutes in a month and the phone is about $50.

That cheap phone you buy here in the US won't allow you to make calls back to Australia unless you have that feature added an then it's not a cheap phone anymore I would get the cheep phone just to use while here. Bring you Australian cell to use when you want to call from here back to Australia. I get a cheap phone when I go to England for making calls over there. Also, for some reason it is inexpensive for me to use that same phone to call from England back to the US.

That's correct. I can't call out of the country with my Walmart phone.

We buy a $30 walmart phone (Net 10 blue packaging) whenever we go to america. They are good, and you register online to phone overseas.
But use it sparingly, no long chats. The minutes you are allowed are used calling and receiving so watch out for that.

I'd still recommend them.

Mart.

That's also a good idea. We sometimes use those multi channel two way radios on tours or trips to keep in touch. We also tune into the truckers channel to hear about road conditions, speed traps, etc.

My TracFone guide says I can call Australia and 60 other countries at no additional cost. Prices start at $19 for three months plus phone is about $25.

If you bring your Australian cell phone to the US, you can use an AT&T, T-Mobile, or other GSM-based pre-paid SIM card in place of your Australian carrier's SIM card. That will save you money by not having to purchase another phone.

I would start by calling whoever your phone carrier is. When we travel we turn on an international calling plan just for that month then turn it off. FYI... if you go the prpaid phone route, don't go out of your way to find a walmart...almost any store would have them, Target, J-Mart, Sears, radio shack, best buy.....
