Can anyone recommend a good primer and paint for the front spring. I would really rather get paint locally as opposed to having some shipped from one of the suppliers. Thanks

I use <OKS 511>. This is lubricating varnish with a long-term effect.

For small stuff like if thats all you're painting, I just use rattle can stuff. An etching primer and top coat like Rustoleum or Krylon. I kinda like Krylon because it dries faster. Are you taking the spring apart ? I like to take them apart and grind the 'wows' out of them to smooth them up so the leaves will slid as they should. That makes a big difference.

I guess I should have said grooves. As the spring leaves flex they wear a notch/groove across the leaf below it. The far edge of these grooves can get sharp and steep so if a good bump is hit the leaves then ram into the end of these grooves not allowing the spring to work fully and giving a choppier ride.

I guess a wow is an American term [slang]. Maybe its just a Northeastern term. Basically its a big bow.

I have now understood that, thank you very much for the explanation. For such hard transition fits I like to use MoS2 greases.

Patrick, I had mine re tempered and re arched, so yes they are still apart. I sanded the scale from the re tempering process off and ground a slight bevel on the underside at each end of each leaf. I want to paint them before I put them back together. Thanks

I generally lightly coat the leaves with a graphite grease. I'm not really sure whether that actually works or not.

Prime both sides with epoxy and then spray it with a semi gloss black paint.

I did not know that Slip Plate was made by John Deere (altho the can is green and yellow). Works good.

Slip Plate or Moly Kote (trade names) are excellent for spring finish coating and lubricating.
You should never use grease on a leaf spring. It attracts dirt and dirt is a very good abrasive that greatly shortens spring life. Likewise, you should never paint a spring with ordinary paint. It has NO lubricating qualities.
Teflon buttons or liners between the first two leaves are a good way to get a softer ride.
There are spring covers available that keep dirt and water out or you can wrap the spring with black vinyl electrical tape.
