Y-Blockl Cheap Electronic Ignition???
I'm wondering what guys are doing for electronic ignition? I want to get away from the points in my distributor but when I looked at the MSD in Speedway Motors I couldn't believe the $375 price tag. Is there a better way? Thanks for any advice/ideas.

Re: Y-Blockl Cheap Electronic Ignition???
How does the '57 and later distributor differ from the '55-'56? The only Y block distributor I've ever worked on is the one on my '55 with 272.

Re: Y-Blockl Cheap Electronic Ignition???
The 49 through 56 V8 dizzy is a loadamatic design for the advance. It works OK only when everything is perfect, and it MUST be connected to the carburetor it came with from the factory. The 57 and newer design is very easy to work with, has both mechanical and vacuum advance, and it suited to any combination of intake manifold and carburetion.

Re: Y-Blockl Cheap Electronic Ignition???
Duraspark is another alternative. Complete instructions at:
http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forum...ight=duraspark I have done this and use a MSD 6A box on one, and the stock Ford Duraspark box on another. Both worked great. Couldn't really tell a difference in the controller boxes. Good part is the Duraspark electronics last almost forever and if you need a part you can get it from any of the "chain" parts stores. |

Re: Y-Blockl Cheap Electronic Ignition???
Got a guy down the road from me in the scrap metal business who gets piles of old engines. Will ask him to watch for Y blocks, find me a later 292 or 312 that I can get a distributor off of.

Re: Y-Blockl Cheap Electronic Ignition???
Use the ACCEL Kit number 2020. It replaces your point and condenser. I have had 0 issues with it for 3 years running. I bought the kit new on ebay for like 25 bucks or something. Very easy to do...
by the way, only for 57+ distributors...

Re: Y-Blockl Cheap Electronic Ignition???
Lamar Wadsworth.................While you take some 57 & newer dist. from the Y blocks, take some 4 barrel intakes. These are the "B" not the "A"

Re: Y-Blockl Cheap Electronic Ignition???
The large pattern 4bbl intakes have part# ECZ-9425-B. They can be found on any four barrel Y-block made from 1957 until 63 or 64. I pulled mine off of a 62 Pickup in a junk yard for $50. Gave it a $20 bath in a hot tank and it looked good as new.
