What about a tie-rod puller tool? The two-prong style that pushes from the threaded end.

The best way is a tie rod end press. You can get one at most automotive stores for under $20. The so called "pickle forks" will nearly always destroy the tie rod ends. they (forks) are fine if you plan on replacing the end. If not, don;t use one.

Put the nut back in loosely so the drag link will not fall. Using two ball peen hammers simultaneously strike both sides of the eye where the tapered link passes through. Giving a sharp, simultaneous rap will shock the link loose.

Fordors has it right, but sometimes you need a second person to put a little pressure on the tie rod end in the direction of the way it comes out.

I am almost sure the pitman arm will fit only one way,
but make matching marks just in case.
