I've got nice older leather check straps for my doors but would really like to make them BLACK. Any suggestions for a nice permanent dye/color???

go to the local shoe repair shop and ask them for some leather dye--I have used double strength ritz dye from the grocery store, but to get deep black you must first clean the leather, then remove finish with scotch brite pad and then dye and then put a finish back on

or, the shoe repair shop will sell you a very expensive bottle of high quality dye that you'll spill on something you didn't want dyed (ask me how I know)...

An old fellow had a shoe dying/recoloring service in the parking garage where I once worked. he used acetone to remove and prep for refinishing. He drank a bit also and was a real happy guy when he was headed home!

Shoe repair shops have all sorts of dyes and polishes, black is black and with enough coats the brown will fade away

Use SEM rattle can Landau Black, it will be perfect.

This exactly. Find one in your area and they'll do it for free if you bring doughnuts. Goodwill for them expecting you to return for more work later... and you might. (Father-in-law was a shoe repair guy)

I used the SEM rattle can Landau Black to change a brown interior of a 72 Buick Skylark to a black interior. I did everything....seats, door panels, dash, console. After 7 years it still look great and the seats had held up with me getting in and out and not coming off on my clothes.

SEM is likely available at your local car paint store. It is at mine. I'll be dying several Model A brown panels black myself soon.
