Default 36-41 Rear spring bolts to cross member fit??????

I am putting the rear spring into the crossmember and when I tighten the nuts onto the u-bolt the braces/brackets/keepers are tight to the spring but they are not being pushed up tight to the cross member. Is this correct? I thought the nuts and lock washers would push the cross piece from the u-bolt against the spring and the eyelets would be up against the cross member?

As Always, thank you for any advice.

Here's what the U-Bolts and clamps look like on my 1940 Ford car. These are the original stock 1940 Ford parts. I did not use washers.
Nuts are torqued to 80 foot pounds.
Are you sure you have the correct parts? The U-bolt clamps should go on quite easily - a little at a time.

That's correct, They shouldn't be against the crossmember but should be tight against the spring and the square head of the spring bolt should be in the square hole in the crossmember.

Thanks for the pic and quick response. That is what mine looks like I just thought when I took it apart the eyelets were up to the bottom of the cross member. I guess that is what happens when a quick "over the winter" rebuild ends up taking 3 yrs.

Thanks

The spring should go all the way into the cross member and bottom out (there should be a piece of fiber anti-squeak material between the spring and cross member). There may be a square head bolt in the center of the spring (the square head bolt fits into a square hole in the anti-squeak material. The square portion of the bolt has to fit (through the anti-squeak and also ) into a square hole in the top of the cross member.
Do you have the correct amount of spring leafs? any missing and you MAY have to add a filler to the bottom of the spring or you could run out of threads on the U-bolts and the nuts will bottom out.

If the clamping bars are tight up against the crossmember they are not clamping the spring properly. A gap is correct.

Mart.
