For starters, it has 2:75 gear ratio. From this site http://www.fordification.com/tech/rearends_ford02.htm
you will see it's a 9 inch 1968 Ford Mercury Pass rear, non locking with 28 splines. The other numbers indicate date and plant where built.

That is a "tall" gear! What are you putting it behind?

You would probably have better luck posting on HAMB, http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/

Man, I thought he had the BEST of luck, as 19Fordy did a pretty thorough job of answering his question right here.....in short order, too! DD

Be sure to measure the wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface distance of your stock 40 rear and see if that new found Ford rear is too wide. The WMS to WMS on a 40 Ford car is 59 1/2 in.

That's a good recommendation. I have had this 9" Ford rear sitting on the floor in the garage for several years...hoping to install it into my '32 sedan. I finally have the time to do it this summer. First thing I did was measure center tread to center tread on the '32 with the current rear end (it was 58" even). Then I removed the tires/wheels from the '32 and bolted them to the 9" Ford rear end...measured again the center tread to center tread and don't you know that it also measured 58"...boy, was I lucky! This 9" Ford rear end came out of a '33 Ford Cpe. I haven't run the numbers to see what it originally came out of. It has a 13 tooth pinion and 39 tooth ring gear (.333). That will do until I find a .350 or so. Did I cypher that correctly? It might be a 3.00 to 1 instead of .333.

Good luck,
Pat
