Jay, I had a repair shop through the 70's and well into the 80's. I could tell which clients used STP as soon as I had lifted the intake off. It was FULL of crud.
These were clients that faithfully changed their oil and added that crap (STP).
Talk about "snake oil"...

Or affiliated with draglines. ISO 480 and 500 for hoist, drag, and swing transmissions. Consistency of tar when cold-20*.

Don’t use STP by itself in a Gemmel or a recirculating ball steering box.
You’d need to mix it with a grease.

I used to work as a General Manager at a speciality aftermarket suspension manufacturer. From the early 80’s until about 2005 they blueprinted Saginaw steering boxes. (think blueprinted engine and you’ll get the concept) The end products had about twice the accuracy of a brand new steering box.
At any rate, we used a custom mixed concoction of red synthetic grease and STP out of the blue bottles (V8 formula). Mixed it to be have a molasses-like viscosity.
I have a couple of Mustangs with those boxes in them, both of them done in the 80’s. They have a lot of miles on them. There’s literally no play in them.
When I rebuilt the box in my F-1 in 2016 I used all nos stuff and new USA-sourced bearings…. the same grease concoction is inside that box.

I have used STP or a Motor Honey type of product in hundreds of vintage vehicles for over fifty years, pretty well solves the oil leaking problem in steering gear boxes.
Of course when STP leaks out it time to repair or replace the gear box.

I never add STP to the engine oil in an engine I always use a high quality detergent oil like 20/50 GTX, in recent years I have switched to 10/40 Shell Rotella or Lucas Hot Rod/vintage oil.
Many years ago I had a1953 inboard speed boat that had a 8CM marine flathead eng.
The engine dropped a valve one day that broke a piston. I was able to pickup a complete 8CM that a friend of mine had.
When I stripped my engine down, removing all of the marine equipment to put on the replacement engine I noted what appeared to be a blatter out of a football laying in the bottom of the pan, When I tried to pickup 'the glob', I found it to be a large gooy mess.
I normally changed the oil once a year at the end of the boating season, the crankcase held 5 quarts with the filter. When I cleaned the 'glob of goo' out of the pan it held seven quarts...

In the early 70's, if you ran an STP decal at a NHRA national meet, you got some $$ and a case of snake oil. I asked my buddy (who drove for a factory team) what he did with the STP...... he said it made a reasonable rust inhibitor BUT dont use it on a cast surface (like a bare block) because you cannot wipe it off.
