Default 33 Rear End in a 32 Coupe?

I am thinking of installing a 33 Ford 4 door rear end under and into my 32- 5 window coupe. I believe I will have to use the 32 torque tube on the 33 rear end. Will this work? Is the spline count on the 32 and 33 pinion gears the same? Thanks for your insight.

It depends if you have the early or late rear end. The early 32 rear is like a Model A and does not have splines on the pinion. The early torque tube has a different flange. If your rear end flange is scalloped instead or round, you can switch the parts.

If per chance you do have the late '32 rear axle with the scalloped flange where the torque tube attaches to the rear axle housing you will gain nothing by switching as save for the torque tube and drive shaft, the late '32 and '33-'34 rear axles are the same (ignoring the torque tube and drive shaft length differences between the '33-'34 four-cylinder and V8 axles). (And no, the pinion gears of the early '32 rear axle and the late '32/'33-'34 are not the same.)

Thanks for the good info on this switch. Everything has ground to a halt, as my 32 Ford rear end is an early one.

It really takes a lot of work to shorten a torque tube and driveshaft. The alignment and lengths take tooling to get everything right. If the alignment is off, the splines will wear and the driveshaft my fatigue. The flange inside diameter is different on 32's, 33-34's and 35 up. The diameter must be right for the rear being used as it holds the carrier bearing in. The relative lengths of the tube and driveshaft must be right so the front bearing has the right clearance.

What engine are you going to run? Any reason not to use the original reared?
