Default Distributor question

I have read several threads about needing to oil my distributor from the top. My screw that is loosened to set the timing did not have a drill hole in the center so I removed it and put a little oil down in the hole under the screw. Have I made a major mistake by doing so and how do I need to correct it if so. I am afraid I have introduced oil where it shouldn’t be. Thanks for any advice.

You need to have an upper shaft that is drilled so that the oil can reach the upper bushing. Together, the screw with the hole and the upper bushing with the holes in it can do their thing - oil the upper bushing. Otherwise the oil you put in the screw hole does nothing without holes in the upper shaft.

No fret here. As stated above, if your distributor upper shaft has a hole in it, then the shaft will be lubed. If it doesn't, the oil you put in will still be under the cam screw for light years.

That makes me feel better. Guess I just piled something that didn’t need it. Thanks!

Not to worry no harm done. It’s hard to over oil a Model A. Also don’t worry about not having the drilled upper shaft. There have also been plenty of posts showing evidence that as long as you fill the oil cup oil will migrate up to the top bushing.
