Default 40 ford interior light

Can anyone tell me if the stock door post interior lights on a 40 ford were glass or plastic? The replacements I have are a very thin plastic and is damaged by the heat of the light bulb. 12 volt.

Thanks,

Fourdy

I am pretty sure they were glass. If I am mistaken I am certain someone will correct me.

I have owned 40 Fords for 45+ years now and all of the ones I have had and seen were plastic.

I have never seen a glass one in any of my many 40's.

My original 40 Ford has original plastic lenses. They were never made of glass.

take a close look at the light bulb that melted the plastic lens. The original bulb was of course 6V but it was also #63 that only put out 3 Candle Power (not a lot of light) it was about 4. Watt. Look through some light buld specs and see what the present bulbs specs are and see if you can find another 12V bulb that uses much less power and still may put out about the same illumination as the original. This should cut down the amount of heat the light bulb puts out.

I do not know anything about the passenger cars, owning only commercial vehicles and I do not know how original your vehicle is or how original you want to keep it. This is just a thought. I believe the marker light used on 40's COE's used the same light socket as the passenger car. I believe it used the same size bezel, albeit one that had screw tab. The COE marker light lens is glass...fairly thick glass. I have some extra ones in the parts bin if you would like to see if they would work.

1940 and 41 regular trucks used the same housing as the interior lights of a 40 car, as did the cabover trucks thru 47 did. screw tabs have been added to the truck lights to better secure the lenses, the truck lenses are glass and quite heavy as compared to the original plastic lenses of the car interior lights. 40 interior light lenses were of soy bean plastic and very thin-actually had a classier shape than the glass lenses

Thanks to all. Any idea where I can get some of the truck glass lenses? I don't recall seeing them in any of the catalogs I get.
