model b engine swallows
Hi
I do need some help to adjust the engine of my new model b i got yesturday. the engine starts without troubles and accerates fine in parkposition in the garage. But if you hit the road you better drive with the handgas on the dash. If you accelerate by pushing the gaspedal the engine swallows. Is there possibly some help in this matter? greetings from switzerland |

Re: model b engine swallows
After startup, did you advance the spark by pulling down on the left hand lever on your steering column? Or possibly a plugged high speed carburetor jet? Do you have the B carburetor or the A carburetor? Yo should have a b carburetor with the B motor.

Engine swallows? Please choose another similar word, like coughs, so that we can better understand. Which handgas on the dash do you keep your hand on? the round knob on the right? I have years of experience with these cars. I will gladly fly over to switzerland to teach you how to adjust everything and get it running well. You buy the ticket for me (from Atlanta, Georgia) and I will fly right over! We can have it humming in a few days and then go drive.

Re: model b engine swallows
GAV set correctly? Perhaps open the GAV a bit more, or conversly, try it with the GAV nearly closed. One of my model A's prefers the GAV to be closed all the way.

Re: model b engine swallows
first of all I appolgize my poor Englisch and thanks for the heip. The engine feels like it ties up on street, probably under load only, because on stand it accelerates just fine, also with the accelerate pedal. The car has no lever to advance the spark. I would gess it is a b carburator, because the car is very original stock. choke is not pulled. there is a throttle knop on the dash and with that I was able to drive the car, but not with accelerator pedal.

Re: model b engine swallows
Acceleration under load requires a bit more fuel than No load on stand. We would need to know if the car has a Zenith carburetor or a European type. The GAV adjustment is part of the choke control on the model A but the B is different. A different carb may have different adjustments than the USA model B with Zenith. The Zenith carb has a power jet tube for acceleration that can sometimes fall out in the bowl.

Re: model b engine swallows
That is the correct carburetor for the Model B.
I suspect that one or more of the jets in the carburetor is plugged up with a bit of dirt. They need to be cleaned out. The engine can run without a load, but does not have enough fuel for power when driving on the road. It is also possible that fuel filter is partially plugged with dirt. Or the fuel pump is defective and not supplying all of the fuel you need to drive and have power. (Model A had no fuel pump; Model B has one.) I hope this helps.

Re: model b engine swallows
This car could be a Dagenham product although LHD and assembled in Denmark . If it is a tudor and the door hinges on the back pillar (b post) or suicide door then it is English . If the carburetor has a large "Ford " script on the bowl it is English . More totally useless information from "The Old Country".
