How to regenerate a faulty car battery (high voltage)?
Hi,
In the "Popular mechanics car care manual" there is an article about servicing the car battery. As a side note, the article describes a method of regenerating damaged car batteries by applying some 30 Volts. This of course is for 12V batteries. It also mentions that the method is dangerous and should only be performed by professionals, and hence not the average reader :-). Does anyone know the method of applying a very large voltage for a short amount of time to kick the battery into operation again? Maybe an online description or something? The thing is I do have a very powerful direct current power supply: It goes from 0-30V and 0-20 Amps and I can make precise adjustments. Lucas |

Perhaps to burn through some sulphation----generate some hydrogen gas------then the bad insulation ---spark----then the battery energizes itself----the top comes off, the electrolyte escapes along with a loud noise-----

And when electrolyte flies into your eyes it is not good. This happened to me when I was young. Good thing there was a water faucet close by. I for one would forget it and by a new battery. Much cheaper and better than messing up your eyes.

My brother bought a battery charger that has a desulfation setting. Try one of those on your battery, or buy a new battery, but connecting a high voltage, high amp power supply sounds like an explosion waiting to happen.

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/no...l#.Vts-Vl7Sl9A I've seen/heard a 6v explode on a farmall M, dam scary, went off like a shotgun, tractor was running full throttle on a grain auger. Dad boosted it that morning just to "unload one load", and I think that's exactly what he did [emoji90] Looking for the front bumper emblem that has "Ford, Made In Canada" Last edited by Pinesdune; 03-05-2016 at 03:15 PM. I dont need a new battery at the moment. I just want to learn the method of doing it - it might become handy in an emergency, for instance when driving across USA in an old banged up model A :-)

When the battery got too weak to start my 1952 Studebaker, I put in some of that battery juice you could buy to rejuvenate a weak battery. It actually worked for the next month until the neighborhood vandals stole the battery, radio and radiator.

i personally hope that if someone does know the method they please do not post itM it is the most ridiculous and dangerous I dea I have ever seen discussed on this site, I hope the moderators remove it immediately ! Wayne

On an OLD testy battery, Chief would hook a heavy cable between the posts, discharge it COMPLETELY, then 5 minutes of FAST charge, then on a TRICKLE charger for 24 hours!----GOOD or BAD, I Don't know?????

Drop it on the floor, roll it over do this a few times....your waking the battery up. Then put on fast charge.
You get about 6 month's to a year out of it if you use it. Learned this from a old timer. |

From what height should it be dropped and when rolling it do you do this with the cell caps on or off

It's not the height it's the sudden stop that counts :-)

Re: How to regenerate a faulty car battery (high voltage)?
I believe that desulfation protocols call for alternating high frequency runs to slightly higher voltages (still less than 14 V for a 6 V battery) not high voltage excursions anywhere near 30 volts.

Re: How to regenerate a faulty car battery (high voltage)?
You can buy 6 volt batteries pretty much anywhere, twelve volt even easier. Plus you own a crank don't you?

Re: How to regenerate a faulty car battery (high voltage)?
I have seen batteries explode, and have seen evidence of explosions several times. To risk your eye to this danger is not worth it.

Re: How to regenerate a faulty car battery (high voltage)?
I've watched several videos about using Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulfate) to revive a battery. FWIW, here's one video of many. (One point is to revive a battery before it is too far gone).

My eyesight and health are worth more than $ 75 dollars! Don't be foolish. Buy a new battery. Wayne
