Default powermaster alt

Has anyone had any issuse with one of powermaster alternators? Mine is 2yrs old and has less than 2000 miles on it. Just reworked valves and reinstalled it and had some charging issues. Volt meter dropped like a lead ball when I turned on the lights. Charged battery last night to elimate that, plus its a new battery.

I bought a chrome one at one of the car shows. It ate the rear armature bearing early on. I thought it was a fluke and replaced it myself. That one went bad. I installed my spare and took it back to Powermaster at the next show. They repaired it and sent it back to me. Did the same thing and I gave up. I guess that is what they wanted me to do.

I had one with very low mileage which became a problem. I put a spare on and it has been going for several years. Don't remember the brand of the spare?

Had a powermaster alt. the one that looked like an generator, lasted about 5 miles then quit they were sending a new one but in the mean time i took it apart, looked like it would never last as there was not way air could come in from the rear to cool the rectifier or diodes, cooling air in alt goes from rear to front, so i returned it and put one a regular Delco alt. newer style like off 90 gm pickup works great and fits with the three carbs. No experience with Powermaster, but I've had one of Ed Whitney's lookalike conversions going on six years with no problems. He advertises in the V8 Times.

I have two of these. One on my car and one for a spare. The one I have for a spare will not pull in at low rpms, I have to rev the engine to make it pull in and if you idle speed is set too low it will drop out at idle. Thats why its being used as a spare. Rev your engine up and see if it will pull in and start charging.

That is what I have run on my 37 since startup 4 years ago an Ed Whitney alternator inside his special made case with 37 ends.

powermaster = crap what a way to flush down $400. So much for that original look. I took this thing apart and it must be made by children.

If you're looking for a stock look, the PowerGens are a larger diameter and may conflict with correct accessories. Go with an Ed Whitney alternator conversion or convert your generator from 6V to 12V...that's what I did...4 yrs no issues. Only one drawback, the 12V gen doesn't have the amperage output of an alternator but it's not an issue for me...my 2 cents...

I'm at that point to have my gen reworked to 12v. Since I dont really have any accesories to worry about truck is mostly stock. Certified auto has an alternator kit for under 150, and they are less than 40 mnts away, they can also rewind this piece of crap powermaster turd and also my generator. Going to get prices for those items. Just completely frustratedabout spending big mone on items that are made overseas and pieces of garabage. I finally have my truck together to drive and now I cant because of stuff made in china

47 flatbed...I hear your frustration...I didn't got the powergen route because the air cleaner brackets won't fit around the larger diameter powergen...guess I got lucky there. But I have spent much more than I'd care to shipping inferior parts back to big name suppliers...

Several yeas ago I built 7 6 volt alternators into 39-48 2 brush generator houseings I ran one over 4,000 miles last year. 1,200 miles in 22 hours twice at 65 plus MPH and no problems. They are 12 volt standard Nippendenso ???? but with a 6 volt adjustable regulatator and reverse polarity diodes I adjust it to 7.5 volts at driving speed and with a standard small diameter stock Ford pulley it idles at 6.85 and comes up to 7.5 with just a few RPMs above idle or a fast idle. It's only about 25 amps but that's plenty for me. When my hard drive crashed I lost the pictures but in Oct. when I get back to Florida if anyone is interested I'll take some more and post rough instructions and parts. I am not interested in building them. It requires a special shaft adaptor which I could get someone to make if needed. G.M.
