Default transmission difference 60hp to 85hp

I was wondering what difference there is between a 60hp transmission and a 85hp transmission? wanting to swap out motor only if I can get away with it. Thanks

I'm no expert by any means but I believe that all will bolt together but the 60HP transmission has a solid casting to protect/cover the starter bendix where the 85HP has the tin can. I'm often wrong, but never in doubt.

The stock 1937-39 V8-60 transmission (as used in the passenger cars) was a very light duty unit. Everything inside the gearbox is smaller…..the gears, the bearings, the shafts…..everything! So it’s reasonable to assume that even if you can work out the clutch spline problem, this unit would not hold up to the additional power and torque of the 85hp engine for very long.

Doesn't the v-8 60 commercial transmission have the same gears as the bigger V-8 engines ?

From information I've looked at in the 1938 through 1941 Ford & Mercury chassis parts & price list, there appears to be three different cases made for the V8 60 applications. The 73-7005 was for V8 60 apps in 1938 through part of 1940 and these were commercial applications. The 74-7005 case was for passenger car applications in 1938 & 39 and this is likely the "little" case. The 022A-7005 was for all V8 60 applications in 1940 that used the remote control shift with a side shift housing. This likely included some commercial applications. The 3 on the tree is not common for commercials but was used in that time frame for both commercial and passenger car applications.

The 022A input & cluster were a 15/29 set of gears that were used for some V8 60 applications that had helical gears but they were also used in Mercury cars so there was interchangeability to get this ratio for any application where it was needed. I have a 15/29 set that came from a 1940 Mercury. It works well with a taller rear axle ratio on light bodied cars.

The "little 74" case transmission had it's own "74 prefix" gears and they were still spur type. The "67 prefix" gears were used for V8 60 applications in the commercial case and they were part helical & part spur type gears. These were used in some applications beginning in 1936 and were carried through 1939. The 1940 case would have had the 022A type input gearing.
