Default Clutch Disc

Has anyone heard of putting a "spring steel" between the clutch disc and lining . My clutch man says this will help clutch chatter. Thanks John

If you look at various disks you'll see some that have no 'cushioning' and those with flat springs between friction faces or coil springs. If getting a disk for a model A [ or almost any other car] get one with the flat metal 'guards' to keep the coil springs from escaping.

Any with some form of absorption are supposed to help with smoothness in engagement.

It's not a separate spring. The thin steel disc that the lining is riveted to is stamped into a 'wavy' pattern when it is made. This gives it a springiness-if you look at the edge of a disc you can see a gap between the two linings. This gives a cushioning effect as the the clutch pedal is released, so engagement is gradual, as the 'springy' disc is compressed, instead of an all or nothing engagement.

“Marcel” is the technical term for a wavy spring sandwiched between layers of a clutch disc. This spring provides a smoother engagement and release by cushioning the clutch assembly. It’s actually named for a 1920’s hairstyle, believe it or not…
