Default Engine Pans

I'm thinking of buying a set of repro engine pans (A6775). Has anyone installed them on a '29? How do they fit? Did you have to make any adjustments to get them to fit?

Thanks!

I had to cut the part that fits around the exhaust pipe a little larger to make that Pass. side fit on my 29 coupe, but otherwise no problems. I suggest you buy the ones that are powder coated.

Thanks, Ray. Yeah, I think the powder coated ones are worth the chips.

I got mine from SVF several years ago. I have more faith in Bratton's.

Thanks Russ. I think they'll be a good addition... look sharp, keeps the engine bay cleaner and maybe helps air flow. I read somewhere that they sold for $0.50 in 1929!

According to the CPI calculator, 50 cents in 1929 is equal in value to today's $6.84.

Well, you can still consider the amount beyond this to be an investment.

Your children will thank you.

Well, Bratton's sells powder coated ones for $74.25/pair; Mac's are $89.95; Snyder's are $72.50; Mike's are $69.25. Couldn't find them on Bert's. Quite a price range. Wonder whether they are made by different manufacturers?? Quality differences??

About 8 years ago I bought a pair from Howell's because they had the correct round holes, rather than the slots. I wasn't happy with them because they look like they were cut out with a pair of dull tin snips.

Thanks Tom. I just went back and looked on-line at those offered by Bratton's, Snyder's, Mike's and Mac's. They ALL appear to have slotted attachment holes. I thought that would be helpful in fitting them to my car, but never thought about what was correct.

By the way, there is an article on how to make them if you are into sheet metal origami. You can find it in "How to Restore Your Model A", Second Edition, 1967, on pages 96-97: "Model A Engine Pans" by Edward H. Fenn.

If I remember correctly Howell's had round holes, but I think they were larger than original holes. Also they didn't have the strengthening rib on the front lip. I'm not sure who does?
Anyway I'd rather have the better quality ones from the other dealers even with the oval holes.

Tom: Of those vendors mentioned above, only Bratton's specifically states that "the front lip has the original bead stamped into it". Doesn't necessarily mean the others lack that bead, they just don't mention it in their descriptions. Good points! Thank you.

By the way, Howell's still carries them ($50.00) but they are not painted. Here's a link to their site:

Bert's has unpainted Made in USA pans, part no. A-6775 for 52 bucks and A-6775-A powdercoated for 69 bucks. They are the slotted version. You will find them almost all the way to the bottom in the engine parts section. Good folks, good price.

Thanks Mr. Baese! I was on their site, but just over-looked them. Yes indeed, Bert's gets a lot of my business, especially finding original parts. I bet it would be hard to find original engine pans, though. Most of them got pretty banged up or were removed and tossed away. Glad to know they've got 'em because they're closer to me and charge less for shipping.

If a person buys powder coated pans and they don't fit properly there is a big problem. That is just my experience with some after market parts.

Sammie Guthrie at Arizona Model A's has original ones in addition to the modern ones both plain and powder coated. Originals may have to be cleaned up and you can have powder coated. Got a set from him and they went on great for '28 Fordor

I've never had a problem with the ones from Macs, Snyders, or Brattons. The only times an issue arises is due to an incorrect muffler or when a manifold has been cut too many times.

I got my set from Snyders, powder coated. When I asked, they said they were made by Brookville. When I installed them, I tapped the holes in the frame the same as the pan bolts. Makes installation a whole bunch easier.
