He said it makes 440hp. And that there is room to bore it to 4" on a 59ab block?

You'll hit water LOOOOOONG before you ever get a flathead V8's bore to four inches.

It's an obvious miss-print. If it were 3 7/8 bore the outer two cylinders would be just about touching each other.
Believe the 4'' reference was the stroke.

How does he figure 440 hp?

I assume he messaged it to your friend, because I no mention in his posting.

Considering how far apart the two outer cylinders are located, if the engine pictured is bored to 3 7/8" then the wall thickness between them should be less than 1/4".
If it was bored to 4" then the wall thickness would be less than 1/8"
Tell your friend to run as fast as he can away from that guy.

I have had several flatheads bored to .187 over, (3/16) about a quarter of them went into the water jackets, and the bore was only 3 3/8 then, and I doubt if the webbing for the main bearings would stand that much h/p, there is only three of them, a weakness of the flathead, a 4" stroke is nothing, that's a stock merc crank stroke, some thing is very wrong with that add

Ask him to take a pic showing a vernier gauge reading of the bore.

For a "refreshed" motor, you would expect less carbon on the valves and pistons in the picture. Also, the water pumps might need some alignment. A bore of 3 9/16 seems to be still a tad large since 3 3/8" is usually considered risky. Maybe the motor has see thru cylinder walls?
