Yes. The bearing has play and is not a really tight fit. Slides in and out easily.

There should be a inner race/split sleeve that fits over the bearing, so as the bearing doesn't wear the shaft, WHY FORD DIDN'T use Timken tapered roller bearings begs disbelief SMH....., defies logic&rationale&sense.....

The GREEN BIBLE of 1928-47 Ford Parts lists 68-1236-A as sleeve (Rear Wheel Bearing), 2.81 in. ID and 3.19 in. OD by 1.71 in. long as being used in 1936 to 1938 Pass. and some Commercial. The 1938-41 Ford/Mercury Chassis Parts List book shows this same item as being used in 1938 112 in. wheel base vehicles. It cost 90 cents back then.

Could someone please verify if this type sleeve was ever used in 1939-40 Ford cars.
I bought my 40 in 1963 and it did not have these sleeves.

Roller bearings were probably cheaper.

This is interesting because the end of the axle housings had to be hardened and then machined perfect for the bearing to ride on. This process had to cost more than using Timken-type tapered bearings and races.

If Timken tapered bearings were used it would have to look like a 3/4 ton and bigger truck rear end. The axle ends would need more machining, the hubs would need more machining, the full floating axles would be more complicated, and more hardware used.

Maybe machining and heat treat on the axle ends along with the tapered axles & hubs was more reasonable.

Besides who then would have thought people would be messing with them eight+ decades later.
