36 flathead rear main question
I have a 36 ford with original flat head engine. The Pan has been off of the engine for some time and I want to reinstall it. My question is; Is the rear main bearing drain hole supose to have a tube extending from it ?
Thanks for your help.

Re: 36 flathead rear main question
Walt , This subject has been beat to death before and a forum search will be entertaining reading for you . There is a service bulletin from 1936 stating that with the new style bearings it is not needed anymore . Contradicting this is the existance of pipe part # 81A- 6326 for 38-42 big V-8's . If you decide to use one remember to not turn it in more than 5-6 turns as it can become a dam if over installed . You may have oil pump - pickup interference issues and if you do you can cut the pipe off { the local parts guy has plenty 60HP ones and they work great for this . } by the bend and slip a length of soft copper tube over it and solder it . This will allow you to get it by the obstacle . Keep it as straight down as you can . You want it a little higher than the oil pickup . I loctite them instead of welding . The big deal is that hole is a crankcase vent without a pipe installed that stays in oil . Also remember that a real high volume oil pump in these rear seal-less flatheads isn't a real good idea . Your call on using one or not and it will certainly run without it and you will probably get many opinions on this but I always do . My 3.144 cents .

Re: 36 flathead rear main question
Be aware of the front pully ,They often leak and the wind blows it back so you think its dripping ,check gasket on the dip stick
