Is that grease or grit on the speedometer gear?

Don't forget to install the missing oil slingers when you do the tranny.
They came in two sizes, so you need the correct size.

It's grease. It's messier than a soup sandwich.

Before you do the final install make sure the thrust washer is in place, it's the washer with holes in it. Look at the space between the speedo drive gear and the slot for the ring clip, if it's wide you might try two thrust washers so the gear is centered in the slot.

If you stack two thrust washers together you can block the holes, which isn't a good thing.

i have found after properly installed with the washer and snap ring, the speedo drive gear will move a decent amount on the driveshaft. the turtle and driven gear will hold it center...

EXACTLY RIGHT!! Sometimes guys "think" something is wrong, when the gear moves a little, it's perfectly NORMAL.

In the first photo with the baffle missing did the bearing stop / snap ring groove break out ? Is that what I'm seeing ? I'm close to doing the same install and have been watching this thread maybe I can do it right hopefully the first time .

Yes, the snap ring and groove broke and were in the transmission.
