Default 1933 v8 Hubcaps Painted?

Bob Drake always sells quality stuff. I just noticed these 1933 v8 hubcaps "painted centers" All the v8 Hubcaps I have always seen were unpainted, is that because the paint had worn off?

Yep, paint is usually long gone on most.

The Bob Drake caps appear to be very nice reproductions...It's a shame the painted caps aren't the more correct darker shade of blue. Pat

this is a repro
and I think original

I guess you are better off buying unpainted and painting them yourself with a blue/green color closer to the original.

The green cast to the color seems to come with exposure. NOS caps that have not seen sunlight for 80+ years are generally true blue (Harding blue was Ford's name for it), but not as light as that in the photo of the reproduction. The sign painter's one-shot enamel blue is pretty much a perfect match to the original.

Reflex Blue is sort of the "standard" blue used by sign painters.

The light blue color looks too light and I think that 39topless has it right. I went on their website to make sure.

I work in a sign shop and reflex blue is really close to original.

Use the 1-shot reflex blue. Use a small quill (#1-2) brush or a good quality round brush. Place a small amount of paint in small reservoir. Using a sheet of wax paper as a pallet, mix paint with a tiny amount of Penetrol to increase flow. Hand paint the area directly. Work paint both directions to smooth. No prep needed. If needed, clean up edges with a small brush dipped in lacquer thinner. If not satisfied with the results, just remove the paint with a rag dipped in lacquer thinner and try again.
Work in a "warm" environment.

The paint adheres to stainless as even polished it retains some "teeth". Painting chrome plating is another matter. Paint sticks to nickel plating pretty well, but a chrome surface needs to be scuffed for paint to adhere.

Here are pictures of a NOS 1933 Ford V8 Locking Hubcap. This Hubcap still has the original blue paint in the centre, which is very dark in colour. The regular Hubcaps were also painted in the same colour and fashion. Hope that this helps.

You might want to try a Model A parts house such as Snyders or Brattons for a small bottle of paint. The bumper guards on Model A's had a Ford Blue paint. As I remember it was the same dark blue.
Good luck,
