Default 1929 roadster

Need some help. Two questions. Does the shift tower boot and brake boot go over or under the floor matt? Also how can I find dead center without using the hand crank? Crank will not go in because of interference problem. Sheet metal under radiator too high and radiator cowling in the way. Thanks for your help.

I put the boots under the mat. Not sure if it's correct but it looks and works great.

I believe the boot was not originally there from Ford, so whichever way suits you is fine. Mine is under the rug.
Some of the vendors offer a crank nut wrench (pricey) which you could use instead of the crank OR fix the alignment issue.

To locate the notch, how about putting it in 3rd gear and rocking the car while holding the pin? That technique worked for me. This allows one person to find the dimple without contortions.

There was a seal around the shifter for early 1928's
