Re: Rare winter pics with A
About three inches at my house. Even deeper over in Atlanta. Absolutely everything is stopped dead. Schools, businesses, churches, transportation -- all shut down.
Our greatest fear is ice -- once it begins to accumulate on the trees they start taking down the power lines. At that point things shift from a holiday atmosphere to something dangerous. So far, this hasn't happened this time.

Re: Rare winter pics with A
I'm south of Atlanta, GA and it's still icy on Tuesday AM. I have a broken foot so can't work on the A.
Still drizzling freezing rain about 30 deg and not going to get much better today. My wife keeps looking thru the kitchen window. If it gets much worse I will have to let her in!! Ho, Ho actually it's lousy weather and looks to be lousy for another day or two |

Re: Rare winter pics with A
We pretty well escaped most of what you got in ATL, Ray... It started snowing late Sunday afternoon...just about when our FedEx weather guys said it would (damn, those guys are good!). We got about 4 inches overnight, and it had stopped by 10:00 AM yesterday. The kids loved it, but we pretty well took in in the shorts....business and schools closed for the most part. Driving was not really difficult...no ice with this storm...just nice, dry, powdery snow...the kind that "scrunched" when you walk on it...know what I mean? It was above freezing most of the day yesterday so the streets pretty well melted off...and the traffic pretty well drove them dry. I was afraid of re-freezing last night, but this morning we could get around pretty nicely...no ice, except for some overpasses. I didn't have any problems getting the boys to school this morning, nor coming in to the office. Didn't get the A out yesterday, but I drove it to breakfast with my hot rod buddies Saturday morning. That Otwell heater sure made it nice.
Tonight's different, though...it's going down to 18...colder'n a witches...well....er....it'll be cold tonight....let's leave it at that.

Re: Rare winter pics with A
We are looking at re-freezing again tonight. I can recall deeper snows in past years, but this even just won't go away. No appreciable melting today, and no hope for the next several days.

Re: Rare winter pics with A
For my first five years with my A, it sat out in the driveway, dorm parking lot, or on the street, thru Michigan winters. The only real aggravation was the need to take the starter motor in to the house at night or the congealed rear-main leaked oil on the bendix wouid cause it to spin uselessly. Many really cold-finger mornings lying on my back in the snowy driveway putting that puppy back on so I could drive to school.
Here we are posing for a yearbook photo in front of the school. Steve |

Re: Rare winter pics with A
I do feel sorry for you folks down south because it is so unusual and there is little you can do about it. Up in Minnesota we do get dumped on and have learned to deal with it. Whether or not we like it !!!!!

Re: Rare winter pics with A
Whoa! Something's wrong with that picture. The car is on the wrong side of the fence. Look at that nice large empty carport on the other side of the fence, and the poor old Model A sets out in the snow.

Oh well, it can't hurt the patina. It is due to get a huckster body in the spring if the wintering rabbits are willing to vacate. It also presented an opportunity to change my avatar with the change in seasons and the fresh snow presented a really good scene. So far we have had just about 50" here in Southern Minnesota this winter. |

Re: Rare winter pics with A
Success! (from OP)
Today I finally managed to extract my modern truck from the snow in the back yard (see first post in this thread). The process involved partially deflating the back tires, digging, pushing and the application of liberal amounts of cat litter. The yard now looks like it probably did in 1864 when Sherman's army came through. Throughout the ordeal, my A just stood there looking on impassively, although, at one point I thought I detected a slight smirk.

Re: Rare winter pics with A
Well, I had hoped to back my "A" out for some pictures today, after clearing 20" of white stuff from my driveway. Unfortunately, my snow blower had other ideas. Both auger drive belts self-destructed and took out the belt cover when they did. Bottom line: I can get our modern iron out for tomorrow's commute, but the "A" has to snooze until I get new belts.

Re: Rare winter pics with A
As I understand it, Peter, you are correct about the "miracle of global warming". It is increased ocean temperatures that lead to the extra dumping of moisture on the continent. That is my understanding, shallow tho it may be.
