Default leaking gas tank at dash screw holes

I been driving my 30 rattler pickup for a few weeks now and yesterday I filled it up with gas to full mark , big mistake , I had gas dripping on floor boards while driving and had no fire extenisher ...I shut it down and removed dash and tried to plug screw hole but not much luck ,I was near home so I drove it expecting an explosion at any second ,but got home and plugged hole with Permatex and put screw back in ..it worked..but now I have to wait until gas level gets below bad screw hole for a permanent repair ..sc

Are you sure its leaking out if tag acre hole. The likely cause is the gas gauge itself and gaskets. Once the tank level is below the gauge removed and repair and replacement of the gas gauge gaskets is in order

I'm not sure that hole is "tapped through" to the interior of the gas tank. IIRC the casting is designed to make that a blind hole.

That is unless some bright muffin decided to drill out and tap the hole? If that is the case then maybe Permatex No. 2 is your best solution?

Still, a gas gauge rebuilt/refit might not be a bad thing. Put in the solid plastic float too and prevent "cork crumb-cake." Or the dreaded "Titanic Cork."

Don't ever drive it again with a leak like that. You've got electric spark right next to gas and gas fumes. You were lucky this time. Any time you work on the dash panel or gas gauge, disconnect your battery.

Buy a short set screw and run it in deep enough to leave the correct length of threads for the instrument panel screw. JB Weld or a similar permanent sealer on the set screw should work as a good repair.

Heh. I was thinking to access the inside through the gas gauge hole and use a regular screw and a right angle screwdriver to put a short screw in from that side with permatex.
