Default Question regarding correct way for rear stake pocket

I am in the process of fixing work a PO did. Part of it includes replacing the rear stake pockets; however, I have noticed that in some trucks the rear lip runs down and over the rear cross member but in other cases it stops right at the bottom of the tailgate...what's correct?
I am using MAC's rear stake pockets and it has a lip all the way down but can trim back if needed.

I'm sure someone else will chime in here, but I can send you pics of my very original 35 if that will help.

Goes down over the crossmember and is rivited. That is what gives the bed sides rigid strength.
