Bubba a ?
Bubba I have three of your flathead distributors that work just fine. All are on engines with the aluminum timing covers. Today I switched one to an engine with a cast iron cover. I assume that it will work fine even if the gears are not fully meshed. Should I cut off the shaft that extends beyond the gear? Thanks, Pete

Re: Bubba a ?
We machine each distributor to fit the best of all the different covers.
The lower shaft is approx one half what the actual merc would be to work with all the units. Shouldnt be a problem assuming it doesnt hit the bottom of the cover. The lip on the housing should fit correctly as well. The gear mesh is set to ride below the gear. So as to push upward instead of pull down when running. The gear rides a little below the center line of the cam gear. The gear mesh is pretty loose even on the stock flathead as theres no acc drive ( like a oil pump etc) to apply torque etc... Should run just fine........ Last edited by BUBBAS IGNITION; 09-23-2013 at 12:39 PM. |

Re: Bubba a ?
Unless I'm really missing something here, seems to me the gear on the bottom of the distributor is pushed upward by the gear on the cam.
