I think it is worth a try. I doubt the rope will swell when you remove the pulley. It has been there a long time and has been beaten in there pretty well. The new pulley should have a taper on the end to help it through the seal and if not, put one on there. Oil it up and push it in. If you can't get it in, then worry about what you have to remove to make it go. Make sure it goes all the way on and the nut will do up properly, then button 'er up.
