Holes in back of transmission case...
I just noticed something and I should know the answer to but do not know. I have several transmissions and all but two of them have the four holes that accept the throw-out bearing assembly tube as they should.
What are the two transmissions which do not have the four holes used for? Just how was the throw-out bearing assembly tube attached? They are the later transmissions with the thick bearing flanges on each end. Pluck |

Re: Holes in back of transmission case...
The ones without the four holes in front were on the early cars with a multi-disk clutch. They did not use a front bearing retainer that the later throw-out bearing slid on. The early throw out bearing mounted on the clutch pack and rotated with it. The grease fitting was actually inserted into the throw-out bearing itself.
