Shewman's check valve flex hose
How do I contact Shewman about his check valve flex hose?
Anybody tell me the good and bad? I have a electric fuel pump near the tank for start up after sitting a while. Which has worked great for 5 + years I was just wondering about the check valve thingie? Pros and cons from someone with experience Tks, Randy |

I have purchased several from him and I recommend them highly. It is imperative that you have a good filter in front of the hose. His hose cured the hard start issues on my converts. He can be reached at [email protected] or PO Box 163 Kimberton PA 19442. He is a great person to deal with. - Dennis

"Get hosed" as I did, I'm sure GM will post any updated contacts here. He also has adds in the V8 times,
Robert Shewman P.O. box 163, Kimberton PA 19442 I also like the Phenolic spacer, when you get in touch with Robert do inquire about it. Last edited by 39portlander; 04-15-2018 at 06:06 PM. |

Re: Shewman's check valve flex hose
I went through the electric fuel pump etc. about 15 years ago. Then I got to thinking, if they really needed one, they would have had them from new. So I started looking at my car. I measured the travel on the pushrod, and it was within specs. I made sure the "guts" of the pump (check valves, diaphragm, etc.) were up to snuff. I then read some place about slight leaks around the top of the sediment bowl on the pump. I took mine apart and the top of the glass bowl seemed kind of rough. I got out my surface plate (a 2 inch thick slab of granite), some wet-or-dry paper, and got the top of the bowl completely even and smooth. I put it together with a new cork gasket, and it worked fine. A couple of years later, I took off the electric fuel pump and replaced the gas line. It has now been over ten years, and I have not had a problem with it. Sure, when the car sits a long time, I prime it with gas to make it easier on the starter. Two years ago, after I came back from 6 months in Florida, I decided to try to start it without priming it, just to see what would happen. After about 40 seconds of intermittent cranking, it started right up.
The point of all this is that I think, in a way, fuel systems are just like electrical systems. In electrical systems, everyone knows that a few bad connections can add up to a marginal system that cannot be depended on. In fuel systems, a slight air leak here and another one there can also add up to a marginal system that is unreliable. When these cars were new, the were put together with new, high quality components that resulted in reliable systems. These days, with 50-80 year old components and parts of questionable quality, extra care must be used in putting things back together. |

What does the check valve cost? If you don't mind me asking?

Bought one and couldn't keep the car running. Stick with stock, they don't fail.

the problem or perhaps give you a refund. His hoses have Teflon liners that the fuel runs through so the fuel never touches rubber. Plus the outer rubber cover is a fuel hose. Teflon is very slippery and he made special fittings to hold them under the crimped brass ferrules. If they get excessive twisting or pulling on them it's possible to pull the Teflon off it's inner seal. Also a real dirty fuel tank can allow a lot of dirt and crud to limit the amount of fuel to the engine or starve it. The openings in the valve and hose are much larger than the .100 restrictor hole in the carb so it's doubtful the hose as delivered wasn't able to supply enough fuel. These hoses should be rinsed or blown out once a year to make sure tank dirt don't accumulate in the valve. Bob flow tests every hose and tests for pressure leaks. I just called Bob on the phone and he wasn't aware of your problem. I can't understand why you wouldn't contact the supplier of any product if it didn't work. G.M.

Re: Shewman's check valve flex hose
I like the regular Shewman ethanol proof hose, probably bought one of the first he made. I never wanted to unsimplify things with the check valve type to me it seemed like one of those things that may cure one problem but over time could fail and bite you. The only time the engine cranks awhile is after sitting idle and big deal engine probably gets pretty well lubed before it fires.

Re: Shewman's check valve flex hose
One shouldn't need a flex hose with a check valve in it if they have a mechanical fuel pump that's working properly. It has two check valves in it. An additional one in the flex hose would be unnecessarily redundant and just one more restriction to possibly plug up and reduce flow.

Re: Shewman's check valve flex hose
Does the 'gadgiteer' have a website? I'd like to get a little more detailed information on the fuel hose with the 'check valve' in it. What's the theory behind it? What are its advantages? Do I need to add an extra fuel filter to accommodate it? If so, where would this filter be placed. I don't run electric fuel pumps in any of my cars....

Re: Shewman's check valve flex hose
I tried solving a fuel delivery problem with the Shewman's check valve hose once. Total waste of $38.00. It did nothing for the problem that eventually was diagnosed - vapor lock. Only an electric fuel pump solved that.
