fuel pump problems

Last 2 outings had to get wrecker tow 1 time but made it home the next time.Electric pump with 2 Stromberg 97's fuel pressure was 1 1/2 but after driving 19 miles stopped no fuel pressure.Towed home.Cranked to get in garage off wrecker.After a few days checked psi with regulator off 2 1/2 psi so took guts out of regulator to flow full psi.Drive 6 mile today and stopped no fuel psi.Let sit on side of road.Finally got it home.Checked psi 3hrs later today 2psi.Never had vapor lock before.Felt pump on side of road it was viberating but no psi.Don't know if vapor lock or not.Replaced pump a week ago also.When running skipping and popping then dies.Outside temp 90 but have drove this car for years in summer heat.Thanks for help.About to drive me crazy.

Is the tank venting?

yes I took cap off while on side of road and fuel pressure didn't come up.Will look at it today after grass cutting.But will water in gas do this.But loss of fuel pressure while hot puzzles me.Pressure gauge goes to "0".

Fought a similar problem on a friends 32. After it runs for a little bit, no fuel pressure. Put a new pump on it. Same thing. Come to find out, the liquid filled pressure gauge for some reason drop to zero after the engine warmed up good. Still had fuel pressure but the gauge said zero. Turned out to be a bad coil and a resistor. If yours is in fact losing fuel pressure, I’d be looking at the pickup from the tank to the pump.

Could it be sucking air due to the compression fitting into the tank has failed. Have you tightened it? When you installed the electric pump did you put a new line into the tank to feed the pump close to the tank? If so the problem may be there. I have heard some of those new ferrules needing to be annealed to soften them so they will work.
Could there be a piece of debris in the tank that is randomly being sucked into and blocking the outlet from the tank? Post the problem when you find it. I also know of a case where the resistor wire was broken but would make contact until it heated up. When it dies, do you verify there is no gas in the carbs? Those pressure gauges have been known to not register correctly as Ken stated.

If you have a liquid filled pressure gauge, it probably has a little rubber plug in the side. Remove the plug to release the pressure inside (caused by heat) that causes the gauge to read low. You may lose some or all of the liquid. No worries; it is only in there to dampen vibrations of the needle. Then you will know if your fuel pressure problem is really an ignition problem (probably!).

It will stop running and have to have it towed home.I mean quit!.Will check fitting on Drake tank.Been in car for some 10 years.Thanks.1 man told me to check the rubber hose from tank to electric pump, This gas will eat the inside of rubber hose up and collaspe,Will start checking today after grass cutting.

You should have a fuel filter between the electric pump and the tank . The smallest piece can play havoc with the pump .

You have a fuel regulator known to be unreliable at low pressure ,remove it and drive test also hot wire the coil and road test to eliminate voltage drop ,

Going to replace all rubber lines and maybe take tank out to see if something is in tank and get sucked to outlet.Only have very short rubber lines mostly hard lines.Thanks

I found silicon slugs in my tank after I used silicon to seal the sending unit to the tank with a rubber gasket (not a Ford) They would float around, get sucked into the intake, run the carb out of gas, then float away after the car was stopped. after trying all the usual suspects including filter, blowing the new fuel lines, vapor lock I looked inside and saw them. Mine was a new build so had never had a history of the system working correctly. Its a great feeling to know you found the problem versus hope you fixed the problem.

I had a problem with sludge from gas station that would get sucked up into the tank pickup and plug line, when car stalled it would fall off and restart. had to remove tank and clean out sludge! Dave

Tried to remove tank yesterday but it is going to have to raise body a little in the back.When I built it it was close but I thought I had room.Drained tank and took sending unit out and blew air all around and saw nothing.But will put it back together and try it before I take the body loose.Thanks

Got it back together today and it ran in garage for some 20 minutes and didn't shut off but when you recrank it you have to kinda choke it a little when it's hot maybe 3psi too much pressure.Like it is a little flooded.

If it's a little flooded choke will make it worse. Maybe your accelerator pump isn't working as it should be, or maybe it just wants a bit of throttle on hot restart. That isn't uncommon.
