Anyone install seat beats in a 1940 Stock PU
I bought a finished 40 pickup a year ago. The interior is 95% original, I would like to install 3 point belts, or minimaly lap belts. The cab/seat fit net is real tight. Anyone have ideas or some photos? Thank you.

I installed some in my 45, so similar, but not the same. Just belts, not three point. I don't see how one could attach the shoulder strap safely. There is little room for the retractor, not that someone smarter than I couldn't figure it out. I will take photos and post tomorrow.

Not an option for a finished cab but, to do a 3 point properly you should weld a brace from the door pillar to the rear window. It can be hidden behind the existing headliner bracket. There is a tech somewhere on the hamb, couldn't find it.
Laps should be easy enough. Just don't bolt them to the frame. Body only with provided anchors. |

Re: Anyone install seat beats in a 1940 Stock PU
I installed Universal Black seat belts similar to that used on an aircraft in my 40 Tonner. The tonner cab is the same as the 1/2 ton cab so there should be no problem installing them in your truck. As I recall I bought the kit from C&G Ford in Escondido and it includes all the hardware for installation including the large body washers which are needed to insure the anchoring bolts don’t pull thru the floor of the truck in the event of a collision. These didn’t come with retractors which means you have to take care when unbuckling them lest they ding the paint as you leave the truck. They may offer retractable belts now which eliminates that issue.

use aircraft style of lift the latch also you need the 74" belts, I have put them in several of these trucks. under the floor at the rear of the cab is a support "U" channel, go thru that for the most strength

Here's an interesting discussion on whether to bolt seat belts to the frame or the floor.

Re: Anyone install seat beats in a 1940 Stock PU
Hey thanks for all your posts. And for the links about seat belt installations. Sounds like lap belts is the best plan for safety. If I ever do interior modifications then maybe 3 point shoulder belts. Thanks again. Saline Flathead Joe

You can get lap belts almost any where, maybe even your local parts store. Juliano's mentioned above is a good source, but even J C Whitney has them. I bought some from J C and they were certified and looked good.
Carpenter is another source

Re: Anyone install seat beats in a 1940 Stock PU
I put 3 points in my 38pu. I like a the aviator style buckles, I can't remember where I bought them at the time it was yrs ago (or if they are still in business). Lots of peope offer them anyway.
I prefer them aesthetically as they just look more inline with with the look of the truck. You can get that style in laps also. Google is your friend...https://www.retrobelt.com/ Last edited by Tinker; 04-06-2018 at 09:14 PM. |
