Re: Need a pic of a '41 pickup original horn relay
I have 2 '40 cabs, 1 unknown year, and 1 for a '41 6 cyl. I can say it was not on the firewall on any of them, but I don't know where it was. Could it have been mounted on the frame?

Well, '40 will be a different animal, I do know it either bolds to the LH frame rail near the horn or on the LH inner fender panel because that's where the the leads on the harness come out.

It goes on the LH frame rail near the horn as Cartravel posted. if it were to go on the firewall the mount would be flat like OldHenrys picture shows.

Re: Need a pic of a '41 pickup original horn relay
The photo I posted is the firewall of the '41. The regulator on all of them is in the same place. Not enough space to mount the relay next to the regulator as shown in an earlier post.

Re: Need a pic of a '41 pickup original horn relay
According to the Ford Green parts book (mine actually had an orange cover), there is no horn relay listed for commercial-trucks for '40-'47. If your truck has the single horn with the straight projector and the hemispherical cover on the back it will not have a relay. Although as I'm finding out with my '49, different assembly plants did not always use the same parts. I don't think anything was "set in stone" in truck assembly. So your truck could have had a passenger horn, from the factory, that would require a relay.

Mine has the single truck horn you describe. This makes sense (I think) since I can't seem to come up with any pictures of them. I'm not sure why they could omit the relay, I still think it would need one, wouldn't you? |

Re: Need a pic of a '41 pickup original horn relay
It will work fine without it. The '47 COE that I had and my son's '47 tonner never gave any problems without a relay. My '49 F4 has the same horn and there is no relay on it either. The only trucks I've seen a relay on were ones with the double trumpet horns. Maybe the horns like we have just don't draw that much current.

Re: Need a pic of a '41 pickup original horn relay
Did you ever get the photograph you wanted? I wondered as someone mentioned above if the single horn didn't draw much amperage and thus didn't need the relay.

Re: Need a pic of a '41 pickup original horn relay
Apparently they didn't have one in '41. My truck is for sale, I'm done.

Re: Need a pic of a '41 pickup original horn relay
take the single screw off the rear cover and pry the cover off--the relay is inside!! I have three 41 trucks 1/2 , 3/4, and 1 1/2 ton all with the same horn. earlier autos/trucks also had the relay inside the horn cover 34-35-36, etc

Re: Need a pic of a '41 pickup original horn relay
that is a 40 car relay--you can see the two bullit connectors for the horns (2), one wire directly to battery , one to horn button ground wire going up the steering column to the steering wheel to the horn button which grounds out the relay to make it work

Here is what the GREEN BIBLE has for a 1941 Passenger car. The 13842 is the Horn Relay. It looks like the mounting would be limited to the length of the wire on the harness, probably for the Pick-Up, too. Unfortunaly, the book does not show the Pick-Up diagram. Perhaps it will help someone else. MIKE (mikeburch) CLICK ON PHOTOS TO ENLARGE - Twice Last edited by FL&WVMIKE; 03-12-2014 at 11:55 AM. |
