I have had a flat optima and got the charger working by letting the Bat sit over night linked to another 6 volt .then I hooked up the charger .Ted

I have a trickle charger/maintainer for both 6and 12vots which auromatically senses what the battery is so you don't have to worry about flipping switch, works great. The brand is "Opitum" I think. Will check if you want.
