Two Thumbs up. When you have a chance go back & read all the threads / although some were sounding negative & there wanted you to rebuild it there way. It really shows how forgiving these Flatheads are , and there are many / many ways to get to the ultimate end which is Getting on the road , keep the dirty side down & the shinny side up. Also where is this trip taking you & Pepe ? |

Re: Old Henry Where are You?
I drove 300 miles last night and today on a quick overnight road trip with Pepe. We just headed down the highway southbound and stopped when I was too tired to drive any more. Stayed in a dive motel built of cinder blocks in the 20's run by a guy that lived in an old rock house next door built during the civil war.
The engine ran smoother than it ever has. I was accidentally creeping up to 75-80 mph without even realizing it, and could still see through my mirrors (previously at those speeds I'd have just enough vibration to shake the mirrors so I couldn't see clearly through them.)

Re: Old Henry Where are You?
Hope you broke a bottle of champagne over the bumper first. Wish I could hear that engine. You find some great places for overnights (no interior pictures ?). Best regards .........

Re: Old Henry Where are You?
The engine isn't much to listen too installed with the muffler on. One place I stopped for gas the guy asked, "Is that a flathead V8? It sure is quiet." That's basically the sound of the engine installed hooked to the muffler - quiet.
But, just in case you missed it, here's the video of starting it up on the engine stand before it was installed. I took the video with my old video camera that isn't as good at capturing the video as it is capturing the sound better than my new camera: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtDnCi6x21I

Re: Old Henry Where are You?
That was the place I ended up with late at night after being turned away from others that wouldn't take Pepe in. Didn't really get a good look at it until morning. Was just lucky I guess.

Re: Old Henry Where are You?
Quote:
Don't lug the engine Avoid premature detonation Avoid overly rich A/F ratio No "hot rodding" The better the oil the longer the bearings may last. I've switched to Mobile 1 full synthetic 10W-30 multi-vis rather than the NAPA S.A.E. 30 I have been running. And, change the oil more often since the filter does not filter all of the oil. I've been changing oil and filter every 5,000 miles. I'll probably switch to 2,500 for the oil and 5,000 for the filter. Where there's a will there's a way. I never thought I'd get my engine fixed within two miles of where I live. But, even though the mechanics had to go through a bit of a "learning curve", I did get it fixed as well as I could have anywhere else and it now runs better than it ever has and is better than new in my opinion - guaranteeing many more happy miles and smiles. Any other lessons I missed?
