fuel pump pushrod bushing replacement
i am rebuilding a 8ba and was wondering the best way to replace the fuel pump pushrod bushing or is this something that is not normally done. the block is stripped and clean and i do have play in the bushing using a new pushrod. how much is hard to tell but i can move pushrod on top about 1/8 inch back and forth. do new bushings need to be reamed?

Re: fuel pump pushrod bushing replacement
That bushing almost never needs replaced and is not a tight fit at the rod when new. Your example sounds good to go.

Re: fuel pump pushrod bushing replacement
I wondered about this as well, hoped I wasn't cutting corners by leaving it. There are so many books and sites around regarding flathead rebuilds- I have read a couple that say you gotta replace it.
Whenever I can cut down on buying expensive parts I'll buy JWL's book. |

Re: fuel pump pushrod bushing replacement
It is a hardened bushing and not likely to be worn out by the pushrod. Also it is not easy to replace! JWL's book should be one of the first items on your list, might save on some of the expensive parts!

Re: fuel pump pushrod bushing replacement
I believe the bushing obstructs the ability to rod out the oil passage. They can be driven down into the bearing bore. The same mandrill can be used to reinstall. That is what I did.

Re: fuel pump pushrod bushing replacement
I just did that, my opinion, I don't like wiggles, not about to cheap out on a 2 dollar
bushing and a new pump rod. As Andy said drive it down into the cam bore. Now I have absoultly no wiggle and the rod slowly slides down under its own weight. I bought this bushing right down the street (engine builder) . Never seen this type; the inside bore has three ribs to retain oil. I didn't ask but I think they machined this bushing. They have a box of these on the shelf Yes they are well versed on 32-53 V8's. They thermo cleaned my block & magnafluxed it--What a job looks brand new. |

Re: fuel pump pushrod bushing replacement
what did you use for a mandrill? after taking measurments it appears i have about .010 clearance in bushing. checked another pushrod and it is .005 larger than the one that was marked nos.

Re: fuel pump pushrod bushing replacement
On many of my builds I remove the bushing and plug the hole with a pipe bushing, eliminating the fuel pump push rod. That is when we rotate the rear cam bearing to plug the bottom hole. This is used in some racing applications.
