Default 39 Deluxe hood support

I’m ready to install my hood and uncertain about the hood support arms. ( repro) the top is obvious but where do the bottoms bolt to? I know it’s to the cowl but I only see one hole where the arm has two holes on bottom that seem quite small(3/16). What size bolts are correct? If anyone can post a picture of this, I would greatly appreciate it. Mark

Would taking off the bottom bracket with the two holes work?

Marko, Please post clear photos of the hinges you are trying to use. Are the attachment points for the hood hinges and the cowl the same for 39 and 40?

"Kube": I am curious as to what that little stamped metal tag on the firewall above the grommet where the wiring harness passes through "says" as I have never seen that before on a 40 Ford.. Thanks, JIM

Mark, likely you have a pair of supports for the 1940 cars. The tab with two holes bolted to the firewall with the pivot being "about" the same location as the hole for the pivot bolt in the 1939 firewall.

I think you would be OK removing the pivot bracket from the ones you have, or drilling the firewall and mounting the ones you have 1940 style. Mock it up by clamping in place and making sure everything works first.

Thanks for the pics. and I agree mine are not correct for a 39 deluxe and are for a 40 although the box( Drake) states they fit both. In their catalogue they show the two styles with a pic. of the ones I have installed in a 40 deluxe. Karl, I will try what you suggest as I am not doing a restoration but trying to get the car together and will clamp these in place to check fit before mounting them. Mark

That’s a body number tag. My 40 convertible had one. Don’t think they were used on closed cars except maybe the 40 Wagon since it used the same cowl.

A quick update, the 40 supports will not work on the 39 as the bracket that bolts to the cowl is wrong. I removed one bracket and it looks like it will work now however I am trying to get hood alignment first. Problem is gap at cowl. The one side is 1/4” and the other is 1/2”. Any suggestions on correcting this will be appreciated. Mark The alignment at the belt line is ok.

From what you describe, I'd be thinking you need to move the entire hood hinge back while keeping the orientation the same as it is now. In other words, don't rotate the hinge assembly at all, just move it back.
Most likely you will need to remove the hinge and slot the hole in the cowl as well as the two small holes in the hinge.
You may already have figured out the geometry of these hinges but just in case... rotating the hinge upwards, will bring the hood down. Rotate it down? The hood will move up.

That is what I was thinking, is the side at 1/4” ok or should that go back some too? I should mention these are repro hinges (drake) and can I take one off a a time or does the hood have to come off?

If you are able to brace the hood, then remove just one.
I would only adjust one side at a time.
The 1/4" gap side... if you are okay with that, then yes, it's "good".

Drake hinges tend to be very tight. If and when you remove them, I'd strongly advise you move the levers back and forth until they move freely. Binding, as they most often do out of the box, will cause some fitment issues.
