Default Question on Suffix's

Been looking through Green Bible and body parts book trying to figure what the meaning of some of the suffix's are. part # 21 A7061704-B, as an example. What does the "B" or the "C" mean ??? Is there a page in the Bible or parts book showing what the Suffix mean ? "A" I have found as per their example on how to read a part number but the others I have not.

Thank you

Frederic

21A is the prefix assigned to the 42-47 1/2 ton pickup. Prefixes in the 40's and 50's can be frustrating. 8A is for 49 Ford, 8M is for 49 Mercury, A01 is for 41 Ford 81T is for 38-47 1 1/2 ton truck. AB seems to be a prefix thrown in at random after 48. Good luck keeping it all straight as I likely messed up some of what I typed. Rod

As a general rule, these suffix's are engineering or design changes. A lot of the FoMoCo parts are utilized for more than one year model and many parts are modified to improve fit or function and also reduce warranty concerns. Some parts have multiple changes too such as carburetors that are set for higher altitudes and rear axle gears that have different ratios and the like. In body parts, it can be a part that uses a slightly different assembly due to several sub-vendors or even a different color or color combo of interior trim pieces.

Keep in mind some earlier prefixes were carried over for decades and some parts were superseeded with part numbers from later years. For example the B prefix for the front wheel bearings superseeded the A prefix, but was used until 1948. Exact same bearings and races. Rod

The suffixes were revisions, with A being added for the original design. The rest were changes made or variations. Having alot of NOS parts I spend alot of time sorting out some of these differences. Rod
