Default Brake booster

Just reading a advertisement on special additional goodies one could purchase with your 1948 ford. Most I have seen but not the brake booster. Has anyone seen an original brake booster installed in a 1947/8 ford. Where does it fit/how is it hooked up/how well does it work ??

thanks Frederic

they were avaiable on big trucks, no sure when this started but I know 49 could have them as optional equipment. I have a 51 F5 that has one.

If you want to see a current offering of power brakes for your '48, go to Ebay motors & type in 1948 Ford jack. Appears an easy installation except for brake line hook ups.

I bet they used a hydro vac. when I was in high school I worked in a body shop. they has a 63 Ford F350 tow truck, it had a hydro vac the brakes where touchy. you had to tap them lightly, if you didn't , you would lock up the brakes!

Frederic-

I have had a '54-'57 Ford (Midland), passenger brake booster on my '35 for several years. It was easy to install, trouble free and gives braking equal to my daily drivers. No problem with locking brakes or special tricks to brake the car. I just brake normally.

As for installation, I didn't need to drill any holes. I just made up an angle piece that would bolt to existing frame holes and to the booster. Once mounted I ran a single brake line from the master cylinder to the booster and then a short line from the booster to a "T" junction mounted on the frame. From there a single line went to the front and another line to the rear. A vacuum plate under the carburetor for a vacuum hose with a PCV valve connecting to the booster to complete the install. That's it. Simple to install.

GM products also had a remote booster used on their cars at about the same time. Very similar to the Midland booster.

I've had a Midland booster on my forty for decades. It works very well but requires a rebuild every ten years or so due to leakage.

We miss our good friend 52merc (Trev). Last time I saw him was in 2013 at the GNM in Lake Tahoe. Hope he's resting in peace, and watching over us enjoying our Early V-8's.
