Too much oil ??
I put too much oil in engine. shows up over the "FULL" sign on dipstick. Not Full Line but the word FULL. maybe a quart or quart and half. Iam taking some out but just curious as to what happens when too much oil is put in. Does it affect running or carb or ???
thanks Frederic |

Re: Too much oil ??
I would think it depends on year of car. 39/40 have codder pin in center of pan for relief of too much oil.

But to answer the original question, most people find than the marks on the dipstick are off on the too little oil side, somewhere in the 4qt range vs 5gt range. With too much oil in the system there is a chance of the crank rod throws hitting the oil when the engine is running. In a high performance engine this is a bad thing and a lot of steps are taken to keep the oil off of and away from the exterior surface of the crank . I'm not sure how big an issue it is in a normally driven stock engine. On an early engine if it doesn't have a rear seal it can blow oil past the rear air lock. Re: Too much oil ??
I thought the cotter pin allows over filled oil to drain out before it can get to the clutch. I made an error it's knot in the pan but logic is still the same - no?

Re: Too much oil ??
not for over-filled oil, for oil that leaked into that area. Cotter pin in the hole would jiggle as you drive down the road and keep the catch pan drained.

Re: Too much oil ??
Over fill will effect the engine, too much oil getting slung around will glase the cylinder walls, ask me I know.

Re: Too much oil ??
Rumble Seat addressed this oil capacity question in the v8 tech papers. Interesting read.

Re: Too much oil ??
There have been several threads on this topic and the general consensus is that the Ford specifications call for 5 qts. No idea why the dipsticks are all marked a quart low!

Re: Too much oil ??
This is quite a Ford mystery. JS how many quarts do you use in a 59 not counting a filter?

Re: Too much oil ??
When I built my motor in my P/U I needed to build a new dipstick to clear the fenton headers. I welded a rod to the cut off original dipstick put in five quarts and marked the level, runs fine.

Re: Too much oil ??
Several years ago I had a Craftsman riding lawn mower. I had my teenage helper change the oil . He didn't know the difference between 3 pints and 3 quarts and refilled the crankcase with 3 quarts of oil. within 20 minutes, the engine seized. Too much oil foams and foam is air mixed in with the oil.
The oil pump pumps a liquid, not air and the engine starves for oil. Yes too much oil can be bad for your engine. How much is too much? Start by adding one quart of excess oil. Run engine and then add another quart...... |

Re: Too much oil ??
If you fill the pan (off the engine) with 4 qt. water you will not put in 5 quarts without a filter. I run the piss out of my 46AB in a super nice 38 coupe with 4 quarts of 50 wt. racing oil!

Re: Too much oil ??
El RAt
I did that exactly when I built my engine. I made sure the pan was at the "in car" angle, then put 4 qts of kerosene in the pan. The 4 qts filled the sump (59 type) perfectly. I then figured that with a short filter (95% oil system), and what ever oil stays accumulated in the crank and lifter valley, that 5 qts would be perfect. And it is. |
