Default Windshield Glass

Well Iam trying to install my two front windows in 1947 car. Have new glass and new rubber. I have put the rubber on to the glass and I either have too small glass pieces or the rubber seal is too big. I have always thought (not having done this ever) that the rubber seal would fit very tight around the glass before install. Then i am thinking that when installed it will compress around glass as it was pushed into place. Bought both glass and seal from reputable dealers so assume (not always a good idea) they are correct.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks as always guys

Frederic

Is this an easy install and if so, is it easy to make water tight? I need to replace the glass in my 38 pickup.

The windshield install on a '47 car is a completely different animal than on a '38 p/u. The opening windshield frame on the p/u is a 2 piece unit that uses glass setting tape on both sides of the glass which is then inserted into the grooves in the frame and the frame is then bolted together securing the windshield. The frame w/glass installed then has a seal which goes around the outside of the frame which seals the unit to the cab when the windshield is in the closed position. There have been threads posted in the last couple of months about installing windshield glass with opening windshields like the one in a '38 p/u.

yes D carpenter was whom the seal came from also, with correct markings. maybe VINTAGE GLASS USA cut it too small. I will have to get a pattern and check.

Some "Bugs" face inside and others face outside. They will go in either side.

Some modern laminated glass is thinner than the original Ford glass.

thickness of the glass is not a worry yet. its the perimeter that is the worry.

I am aware of the difference, but I must have missed those other posts. I was in Costa Rica for three months. I will do a search for them. Thanks

I replaced the windshield in my '46 with Dennis Carpenter gasket, and glass cut from my original glass and it fit very tight. If you are sure the gasket is correct then the only explanation is that your glass guy cut it too small. The "bugs" were etched flat at the factory and because both the DS and PS are the same glass the "bugs" were flip-flopped, one is correct from the inside and one is correct from the outside. In fact all your flat glass should be this way.
