Question Basic Question I Cant Find The Answer To.....

Recently my Dad's Coupe was the recipient of a new engine. The head on the new engine has a large 'B' cast on the top. What does that signify? I've asked six different people and got six different answers............everything from "It doesn't mean anything" to "Police Head". Anyone know what it signifies?

Mutt

That is the second casting for the A engine (hence the "B"), which is a slightly higher compression ration (5.2 vs 4.2) and is commonly referred to as a Police head, since it helped law enforcement with speed issues.

Some people call them "sweetheart" heads because of the heart-shaped combustion chamber!

Nice score! I had been looking for one for almost 2 years and finally found one 2 weeks ago!

In the 70's I had one that had Model "A" raised up on the casting of the head. Was 15 years old didn't know what I had.

I also have one of those heads but no pic yet . I think those heads were sold by Western Auto. There was two versions, one had the heart shape combustion chamber and was higher compression. The other had the original style model A combustion chamber. Both heads had model A in raised letters on the heat riser on top of the head.

Brett4Christ has the more correct answer. They were a Ford Motor Company manufactured head with a slightly higher compression. The early Ford literature mentions them.

Doug, I think the latest posts were speaking of a different head, labeled "Model A" and not just an "A".
