40 Ford Convertible Windshield Installation
Hi Everyone
I'm building a 40 Ford Restomod Convertible which I started with only a body and chassis new flooring with no holes for pedals or steering column placement. I'm now installing the windshield. I discovered that the glass with rubber seal goes into the frame from the inside. My questions: is there any kind of adhesive used to glue the seal to the body? Is the glass just held in by the garnishing? Do I use soapy water to put the seal around the glass? Is any sealer I should put on the glass before putting the seal on the glass? Is there anything special I need to know about the installation? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Frank |

Re: 40 Ford Convertible Windshield Installation
Frank, Check your in box. I'd responded to your private message in full - yesterday.
Copied: Hi Frank, You're in luck as the convertible windshields are the easiest to install of all the '40 body styles. You were correct to install the stainless pieces first. Did you also install the small trim pieces that finish the two ends of the stainless? Install each piece of glass to the respective rubber seal. The rubber / glass 'assembly" is simply set in to the opening against the stainless trim. The inner moldings hold each "assembly" tightly in place. That's all there is to it. Before you tighten up all of the molding screws, tap the stainless down. Be careful not to "ding" it. No sealers are necessary and none were used originally. Drake seals are the best available for fit.

That's funny because Drake seals are made offshore and Dennis Carpenter makes his own seals which I have always used with excellent fit and function.

If you log onto the Van Pelt Sales website, they have a complete description, with illustrations on how the windshield is installed. Go to "parts drawings" and then to "Body Pictures".

Quote:
Some of Drake's rubber stuff is total garbage. His floor boards seals are poopy. On the other hand, some of Carp's rubber stuff is garbage. His rear windshield seals for coupes are way too big. Drake's are great. It appears you have not quite grasped fully the realization of the fact that anything can be made to various levels of quality here in the US as well as China. The quality is fully controlled by the folks buying it. In the above example, it's Drake and Carp.
